On the Edge of the Dark Sea of Darkness (2020!)

Originally published in 2008, and rereleasing with new art on March 10, 2020!

2008 CHRISTY AWARD NOMINEE FOR YOUNG ADULT FICTION

“So good–smart, funny, as full of ideas as action.”
–Jonathan Rogers, author of The Wilderking Trilogy

“A wildly imaginative, wonderfully irreverent epic that shines with wit and wisdom–and features excellent instructions on how to cope with Thwaps, Fangs, and the occasional Toothy Cow.”
–Allan Heinberg, writer/co-executive producer of ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy, and co-creator of Marvel Comics Young Avengers

“Fun to read! Every page has word-play, a pun, or clever dialogue that makes me giggle, and the story is full of insight into life. The characters have great names and come to life and stimulate the imagination. Andrew is such a gifted storyteller; this book will be a treasure to both children and adults.”
–James Bryan Smith, author of Room of Marvels; Rich Mullins: An Arrow Pointing to Heaven, and Embracing the Love of God; co-author of Devotional Classics with Richard J. Foster

“What a great story! I laughed, gasped, and learned more about Skreean culture than I ever thought possible. On the Edge of the Dark Sea of Darkness is equal parts adventure and whimsy–a real page turner that both accelerates the heart and warms it. I loved it.”
–Carolyn Arends, singer/songwriter and author of Wrestling with Angels

“Sometimes, in order to find out who we were supposed to be, we need to get lost in other worlds: Oz, Camelot, Narnia. In On the Edge of the Dark Sea of Darkness, Andrew Peterson provides new and needed places like Aerwiar, Skree, and Glipwood–places where we need to get lost and found.”
–Michael Card, author of The Hidden Face of God and The Parable of Joy, and singer/songwriter of more than thirty albums

“Totally fun! Andrew Peterson, a natural storyteller in the oral tradition, has nailed the voice needed to translate a rip-roaring fantasy tale to the written page.”
–Donita K. Paul, author of DragonSpell, DragonKnight, DragonQuest, and DragonFire

Andrew Peterson spins a quirky and riveting tale of the Igibys’ extraordinary journey from Glipwood’s Dragon Day Festival and a secret hidden in the Books and Crannies Bookstore, past the terrifying Black Carriage, clutches of the horned hounds and loathsome toothy cows surrounding Anklejelly Manor, through the Glipwood Forest to mysterious treehouse of Peet the Sock Man (known for a little softshoe and wearing tattered socks on his hands and arms).

Full of characters rich in heart, smarts, and courage, On the Edge of the Dark Sea of Darkness presents a world of wonder and a tale children of all ages will cherish, families can read aloud, and readers’ groups are sure to discuss for its layers of meaning about life’s true treasure and tangle of the beautiful and horrible, temporal and eternal, and good and bad.

North! Or Be Eaten (2020!)

Originally published in 2009, and rereleasing with new art on March 10, 2020!

WINNER OF THE 2009 CHRISTY AWARD FOR YOUNG ADULT FICTION

“Peterson deserves every literary prize for this fine book. It is obvious that his musical talents have been put to good use as his use of words, plot and narrative read like a well scored film script. A very fine book, by a very fine writer and future talent. Amazing – thrilling and well worth reading again and again.”

–G. P. Taylor, New York Times best-selling author of Shadowmancer and The Dopple Ganger Chronicles

“Toothy cows are very dangerous. Andrew Peterson convinced me and shivers run down my spine at the very thought of meeting a toothy cow face to face. The author spills characters like Podo and Nurgabog onto the page, then weaves a tale of danger that holds the reader captive. Believe me, you will relish being held captive by this master storyteller. But be sure you don’t get caught by the Stranders. Those people just ain’t civilized.”
–Donita K. Paul, author of The Vanishing Sculptor

The Monster in the Hollows (2011)

New edition coming September 15, 2020!

Janner Wingfeather’s father was the High King of Anniera. But his father is gone. The kingdom has fallen. The royal family is on the run, and the Fang armies of Gnag the Nameless are close behind.

Janner and his family hope to find refuge in the last safe place in the world: the Green Hollows—a land of warriors feared even by Fangs of Dang. But there’s a big problem. Janner’s little brother—heir to the throne of Anniera—has grown a tail. And gray fur. Not to mention two pointed ears and long, dangerous fangs. To the suspicious folk of the Green Hollows he looks like a monster.

But Janner knows better. His brother isn’t as scary as he looks. He’s perfectly harmless.

Or is he?

Join the Wingfeathers on an adventure filled with mystery, betrayal, and sneakery in a land of tasty fruits. There’s a monster on the loose and the truth lurks in the shadows.

The Warden and the Wolf King (2014)

New edition coming September 15, 2020!

2014 WORLD MAGAZINE CHILDREN’S BOOK OF THE YEAR

All winter long, people in the Green Hollows have prepared for a final battle with Gnag the Nameless and the Fangs of Dang. Janner, Kalmar, and Leeli—Throne Warden, Wolf King, and Song Maiden of Anniera—are ready and willing to fight alongside the Hollowsfolk, but when the Fangs make the first move and invade Ban Rona, the children are separated. Janner is alone and lost in the hills; Leeli is fighting the Fangs from the rooftops of the city; and Kalmar, who carries a terrible secret, is on a course for the Deeps of Throg. Meanwhile in Skree, Sara Cobbler and Maraly Weaver care for the broken Artham Wingfeather as Fangs muster for battle across the Mighty River Blapp.

Sea dragons lurk in the waters. Wicked Stranders crawl through the burrows. Ridgerunners and trolls prowl the land. Cloven haunt the forest. Monsters and Fangs and villains lie between the children and their only hope of victory—in the epic conclusion of The Wingfeather Saga.

I am excited for the upcoming complete release of the Wingfeather Saga. What a wonderful adventure. I am glad to hear that Andrew Peterson will voicing the new audio recordings. What a privilege to narrate a personal story. I am reeling, however, that I am unable to grab the Peter Sandon audiobook. He brought such a richness to the story and perfectly personified my vision of Podo. It felt as though it was being retold from the characters themselves. This element will be truly missed. The Monster in the Hallows, narrated by Andrew Peterson, did well to stride the story onward in the transition of narration. It was as though Podo had passed the baton. In some ways this is true. Thanks for the updates and excited for the saga’s success.

I’m sorry! Andrew loved Peter Sandon’s narration, too. Those two books were produced on audio CD as well. It might be worth checking to see if any inventory remains? Last I had seen there were at least a couple left on Amazon.

Looks like the audio books for these are no longer available (on Audible or for purchase and download from anywhere that I can see). Anyone have any idea what happened to these and if they will come back? I just bought the first two on Audible and was looking forward to getting the other two. These books are so good!

Hi Karl, I believe they were pulled in advance of the hardcover rerelease for books 3-4. However! The release date for the hardcovers is September 15, so it shouldn’t be long now. 🙂

Karl! I misspoke in my last response. The audios were originally pulled as part of the new publishing arrangement, but they aren’t being released in September with books 3-4; it’ll be next year sometime. That’s the bad news. GOOD NEWS is, Andrew will be rerecording books 1-2! So while it’ll be a longer wait, it will be awesome in the long run. 🙂 Thanks for asking! We’ll post a big splashy official announcement later on.

This is the best book I’ve ever read! It is definitely my kind of book. I’m waiting in suspense to find out what happens to the characters. I can’t take it any longer! i listened to Andrew Peterson’s music before i heard of his books. When i found it, we were surprised to find it was the same person!

I just watched the short. It was a little disappointing. Why are they using Tink’s real name from the beginning? Also, the scene where Tink is on the roof is not quite what it is in the book. Are there going to be a lot of discrepancies like that in the film. I realise it can’t be exactly the same, but still…

Monique, I understand the disappointment that comes with loving a book and seeing it come out a bit different on screen. Some things will be different because a lot of storytelling devices work differently visually than they do on the page—things like dropping clues, pacing, character development, and sometimes simplifying. A few things will be changed because Andrew’s grown a lot as a writer and is glad for the opportunity to tighten things up, especially in the first book. You will definitely see differences. I hope you love the films, though. And a whole lot of things will be the same. Same story. Same heart. 🙂

Hi Sierra, The Wingfeather Saga series is four books long: On the Edge of the Dark Sea of Darkness, North! Or Be Eaten, The Monster in the Hollows, and The Warden and the Wolf King. It is not available in a single-volume edition. Wingfeather Tales is a set of six short stories which take place in the world of Aerwiar and reference people, places, and side plots from the series, but can for the most part be read alone. (I think they are best read after at least book two of the Saga.) Let me know if that helps!

I honestly love these stories. I love how I relate to these characters (mostly Janner). I love how thought the stories are faith-based and have spirtual things they focus so much more on the story, I’ve read a lot of Christan series and they focused more on agenda then story which made them boring, I NEVER got bored while reading The Wingfeather Saga :). But most of all I loved how this series made me feel. I’ve never cried when reading a book, but when I read The Monster in the Hollows and The Warden and the Wolf King I was so moved to tears by the brotherly bond between Janner and Kalmar. This series is a home run I can’t wait to share them with my children someday.

Andrew Peterson, you are my new fav writer!! I LOVE your books, and I own all of them, even the creaturepedia. I’ve read all five of those books and loved them!! When I read the epilouge then I wondered if maybe you could write something for those of us who want … a certain somebody to live (for those who haven’t read or haven’t finished yet) like an extra sort of thing. I know you did that on purpose I saw your youtube videos. But my friends and I want to be a clear story on that part of the story. Kalmar did say even if they didn’t succeed it would still make a great story… so why don’t you make a great story on their adventure. You could call it “Kalmar’s adventure”. Please reply back and let me know. 🙂

Hello! I teach a literature class for middle school/high school homeschoolers and after enjoying On the Edge of the Dark Sea of Darkness with my own kids, I’ve chosen to read it with my class. I’m wondering if you know of a teacher’s guide or study guide. Thanks!

A study guide sounds like a wonderful idea, something we might give some thought to developing. If you’ve got any ideas, we’d love to hear them! In the meanwhile, you can find some great talking points in this review of North!, and we’ve been collecting discussion questions for all four books in our forum all year long.

    Mr. Peterson~
As soon I my pre-ordered copy of The Warden and the Wolf King arrived on my front step, I started to read it. It was completely finished in 2 hours. The verdict…SO AMAZING! Thank you so much for gifting the world with you literature. I suggest making a prequel os sequel series. I want to know about Podo’s piracy, Esben and Nia’s reign, and about what happens to Kalmar, Leeli, and the rest of the gang once they go back to Anniera (if they ever go back)
I am not joking. Whenever my friends celebrate their birthday, I give them the series. Everyone I have given it to loves it as much as I do. Thanks again!

I really liked the fourth book! I have read it twice now, and the second time in only one day. My favorite part was what happened In the last 6 chapters. Thank you for writing this series. We recommended it to our public library, as well as the library at my school. I like the way the books were written and will read them many more times.

I hope you will write more books like these. Thanks for your hard work!

In the words of Samwise the Brave: “It’s like in the great stories, Mr. Frodo. The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger, they were. And sometimes you didn’t want to know the end. Because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened? But in the end, it’s only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with you.” This is one of those stories! Thank you!

These books are so amazing!!!I could NOT take my eyes off of them for one second!I was fascinated by Janner’s visions as Leeli played her whistle harp and by Kalmar’s sudden courage which came in the most obscure situations.I do have to say that I am most fascinated at Leeli’s nine-year-old courage and defense of Kalmar after his transformation from simple eleven-year-old boy to a fierce,man-eating Grey Fang(or so he was supposed to be,but good old Artham rescued him before he was given a name). There should TOTALLY be films for these books.I love the Wingfeathers!!!!!!!!

    Hey Mr. Peterson,
O MAH GERD, may I just say what a huge fan I am of the books?? You have created a world that is just suspenseful enough, just dangerous enough, just real enough and just humorous enough. The result of your intrepid genius? Three of the best books. EVER.
When I first saw the cover of the first book, I must confess, I thought I was holding in my hands a juvenile attempt at a thriller. WRONG. Yes, at times it was juvenile- but only just juvenile enough, and in a way that can connect to the inner child in all of us. So anyway, I cracked it open thinking, “Oh, what the heck. I’m bored anyway.”
Well Mr. Andrew Peterson, you have succeeded in one of the hardest feats ever: making something that someone else likes.
No, it’s not up there on the charts with “the Hunger Games” and “the Help”. But in my mind, it has claimed one of the few spots in my heart for amazing literature.
It is my firmest belief that great literature ruins you for good literature. You have ruined half of my library.
Yes, your books are just heartwarming enough, just scary enough, just imperfect enough, just lovable enough and just clever enough.
Just be careful. As Oskar N. Reteep would say, “In the words of Ogden Nash, ‘Too clever is dumb.'”
Please take the time to reply; I’d greatly appreciate it!!
Cannot wait to hear from you!
    Sincerely,
Taylor Reese, 14 years old tomorrow.

I just finished Book 3 … wow. Can hardly wait until you get to write Book 4, and have commenced praying for your safety, because your untimely demise would be dreadful, dreadful indeed. I only wish my kids were younger and would sit still to have let me read these books to them.

More seriously, you had me weeping at certain junctures in this last book … especially the scene in the Keep where Nia declares “turalay” on behalf of her son. Wow. Like C.S. Lewis, you captured a significant part of the “Deep Magic” that Christ has wrought on our behalf, his sons and daughters who have so wickedly betrayed him. Ah, alas … what a wonder it is to be loved and vouched for, when we deserve it not. It calls us higher.

Thank you for making me stop to face this aspect of my own salvation, and its deep mystery this week.

May the Lord bless you and give you long life! (And not just for the benefit of your grateful readers!)

We just read Tink’s arrival to the Phoob islands and my wife has an idea what is about to happen. In as much loving care as I could muster I refused to tell her what the next chapters held and turned out the light.

I just recently finished reading Monster in the Hollows and I can honestly say that it was by far the most gripping book I’ve ever read–which is saying something because I spend most of my days reading books. I stayed up until one thirty in the morning after a very early start to a very long day. I seriously could not put it down. I laughed. I cried–no, to be honest I bawled throughg the last half, along with crying ‘ooh!’ and ‘no, no, no!’ and *gasp!* And saying a bawled is saying a great deal since I vowed years ago–after setting aside all of my sappy dog and horse stories–that I would never cry while reading a book. I thought it was silly. you have taught me otherwise and I can’t thank you enough.

Our family just finished reading ‘The Monster in the Hollows’ and there was much crying, first for the amazing emotional scope of the story, then for the wait for “The Warden and The Wolf King”. But my kids got me all calmed down, wiped away my tears and I seem to be okay now.
We’ve read Narnia, Pilgrim’s Progress, Peter and the Starcatchers, many others . . . I’ve read Tolkien and many others, but this series is my favorite. I am overjoyed to be sharing the Wingfeather Saga as a family. We will treasure this time together for years to come and as I’ve read in other posts, I’m so thankful that we’ve been given these stories, so thank You, God for Andrew sharing them with us.

Aewiar is a world of it’s own, filled with strange creatures, strange people, and even stranger places. But most of all, The Wingfeathers, a family filled with Honor, Justice, and most of all, Love from the maker himself. Harry Potter can’t compete with that!

Thank you so much for those books! I can’t wait for the next ones to come out. Wait…there is going to be a next one right? I sure hope so! 🙂 I was just getting through talking with my grandma and was telling her how good the story is, and how I really don’t want it to end. I told her I wish there was a series that never ended. lol. I don’t care if a book comes out every other year, but I need to keep reading these book. Thanks again so much for them, they are truly amazing. God bless you all,
    Nick

I recently finished reading the first two books to my kids. We loved them and are so hooked!! I have a “Janner, Tink, and Leeli” of my own and it is fun to see them comparing how closley their personalities match up with the characters in the books.
We have several unanswered questions that we are anxiosly awaiting answers to in the upcoming books. Such as: Does Zouzab ever get his just rewards? How and when did Oscar find out that the Igby’s were the Jewels of Anniera? What was the “Fate of Sara Cobbler”? Will they ever get the Fork! Factory! closed down? Did Nurgabog live? Will Gammon be able to take over all of Skree or only the North? Will Tink and Maraly ever meet up again? Will Podo ever be able to go to Anniera since he can’t cross the sea again? Will Tink ever be a boy agian? If he or Pete are killed will they be nothing but dust & bones? We’d love to see a new map! Where are the Green Hollows and Anniera compared to Skree?
So many questions! So long to wait! May the Lord bless your writting. Your fans are on the edge of thier seats! In the meantime I will continue to recommend them to every one I know! Right now we have my son’s fourth grade teacher reading “On The Edge” to see about reading it to the class.

I’ve seen every Behold the Lamb of God concert in my city, I know the words to most of your songs, and I LOVE these books! But I don’t know which is my favorite! And I know I can’t decide which until the new one comes out………. I hope it comes out super soon! (no pressure or anything, but ever since my mom bought the first 2, and I finished them within the next 2 weeks, i was hungry for more!!!) Thanks so much for writing them, they’re great, and they are my new favorite series.

    God Bless,
    Lizzie

    Hi,

I just finished reading your books, and really enjoyed them. 🙂
Now, I was wondering…. is there going to be a third book in the series? Because… it just seems like there is a lot that is yet unfinished in the story line.
Otherwise great books! Thanks for writing!
    God bless!
