While I am a huge proponent for learning, I am not bent on the importance of school.
In fact, when you think about it, school is often the least likely place to learn what you really need in life:
Raising awareness. Defending freedom. Establishing justice.

As schools across the United States make budget cuts, many of the first programs to go by the wayside includes music, art, drama, physical education and anything else that isn’t straightforward ‘book learning.’
But in actuality, it is these exact kind of activities that make general book learning all the more effective!
This is probably one of the best conversation starters on race, diversity and inequality in America I’ve seen.

Child sex education in Basel Switzerland has taken a disturbing turn as new materials for 30 primary schools and kindergartens include a “sex box” full of dolls, puzzles, books, wooden penises and fabric vaginas.

Colleges around the US are beginning to ad a third option when students enroll in college.
In addition to male and female, a third option that is reflective of neither sex is now being added — genderqueer.

Educating Yorkshire is an inspiring documentary television program from the BBC that focuses on the “ups and downs of life at Thornhill Community Academy” school. It’s “a warm and humorous exploration of what it’s like to grow up or work in a secondary school in the heart of a diverse northern community.”
On one of the more recent episodes, a student by the name of Mushy had a severe stutter. His teacher had an idea to overcome his stutter and the results are amazing:

It’s teachers like Ms. Reifler that can make all the difference in a child’s life:
Will public education is available in most poor countries around the world, you’ll find 100 or more children in a class, making teaching next to difficult as materials consist of a chalkboard and a day full of memorization style learning–which is hardly learning at all.
Thankfully, BRAC is changing the developing world’s educational landscape.
