I’ll be honest, I am a little shocked to think that this happened to people that are still alive, today.
And while it may be too little too late, at least something is being done.
“Lawmakers in the US state of Virginia have agreed to pay compensation to people who were forcibly sterilised by the authorities decades ago.”
Virginia—along with 30 other US States—operated a sterilization program for those “deemed undesirable or mentally unsound.” It was modeled after Hitler’s eugenic policies.
“In the US, about 65,000 Americans were sterilised in 33 states.
More than a fifth of those sterilised in Virginia were African Americans.
Two-thirds were women, many of whom went in for other procedures and were unaware of what was happening to them, reports the BBC’s Rajini Vaidyanathan.”
It wasn’t until 1979 that Virginia’s Eugenical Sterilization Act law ended.
And while Virginia will be paying out $25,000 per surviving victim and back in 2013 North Carolina payed $50,000 per surviving victim, I don’t think any amount of money can make it right.
