The Ice Bucket Challenge is getting people soaked with ice cold water everywhere!
The good news is, millions of dollars has been raised for charity.
But what if we did something a little more practical and a little less dramatic?
Rice Bucket Callenge
That’s what is happening in India.
Started by Manju Latha Kalanidhi, she describes her inspiration:
“[P]eople dumping water on themselves, shrieking, taking videos, the whole idea sort of went over my head…. I felt that as Indians we could not connect to it at some level.”
The Rice Bucket Challenge is such a practical idea! I think it’s great that various charities have gotten extra financial support because of the Ice Bucket Challenge, but it does make one think about how powerful it would be if we all were doing something more direct with those who benefit. Imagine if all those who were involved in the Ice Bucket Challenge had lunch with someone who is homeless or committed volunteer time to underprivileged neighborhoods. Wouldn’t that leave a much longer lasting impression—on everyone!?!
The Ice Bucket Challenge is viral today and gone tomorrow. I don’t doubt the positive benefits from it, but something like the Rice Bucket Challenge spurs me on further and inspires me to do something more practical.
Maybe it’s the ‘power of human touch?’ What do you think?
