After trying to find a doll for his niece that wasn’t caucasian, Nigerian entrepreneur Taofick Okoyo decided to launched a whole new line of dolls called, Queens of Africa.
And they’re outselling Barbie in Nigeria.
Queens of Africa
The Queens of Africa toys are beautiful Barbie like dolls that are far more than just a darker version of Barbie. These dolls have different skin tones, hair types, and even clothing.
“I realized [my daughter] was not too happy with the fact that she is black when she was younger. This, I believe, came about from not having any dolls or her favorite characters in her image. … I felt it’s very important to have her embrace her skin color and race, and be proud of who she is. I believe this will lead [her to be] a more confident adult.”
In addition to the dolls, there are plans for making music, comic books, and even an animated series based on each of these beautifully unique characters.
Meanwhile, “as Barbie sales continue to plummet around the world—Mattel reported a 59% drop in the company’s total earnings over the past few months—the Queens of Africa dolls keep getting more popular.”
And that is awesome.
