I’ve been watching the ‘illegal immigration’ issue in the United States from far away. I gather my news online and have seen the chaos unfold.
While most people are arguing and fighting about how to deal with immigration from a political perspective, I wondered what individuals — regular people like you and me — who are a part of a local church should be doing in this situation. We tend to wrap-up are beliefs along with our political opinions and taint the Gospel of Jesus Christ and mis prime opportunities to build the Kingdom of God and love our neighbor as ourselves.
So how should American Christians deal with the immigration issue?
Catholic Charities Fort Worth: International Foster Care
Caring for the widows and orphans. That’s exactly what the International Foster Care Program by Catholic Charities Fort Worth is doing. It is ‘well-rounded aid to unaccompanied minor immigrants.’ It’s an opportunity for the Church to shine!
From the Catholic Charities Fort Worth website:
“The International Foster Care (IFC) Program assists unaccompanied minors who do not have adult caregivers. The program partners with foster families to provide a safe, nurturing, and culturally sensitive environment that equips and empowers them to reach their full potential. IFC provides services to meet the needs of each youth. These services include tutoring, mentoring, independent living skills training, cultural activities, legal assistance, mental health services, intensive case management and education/ESL classes.”
But this is only the first step for the Church. While Catholic Charities Fort Worth has been identified through the U.S. Office of Refugee Resettlement and Unaccompanied Children’s Services program, it is now for the Church — you and me — to take action and care for these refugees coming to America.
It’s time to take action and show them the love of Christ.
