I’ve spoke with those who are active in helping rescue these girls and this story outlines the situation accurately. I appreciate how the story speaks to the raw human elements that are involved—such as the basic need to provide for their family.
It also helps frame the situation. When you’re trying to fight sex trafficking in a culture whereby mother’s help their own daughters “prepare for work,” it’s difficult to say the least. Just look at the convicted trafficker who defended himself referring to how he’s helped these girls earn a wage.
Before we can really fight sex trafficking, we must understand the cultural undertones being faced—including the perspective that legalized prostitution is a good thing.
