For those of us against legalized prostitution or living where prostitution is illegal, reading news stories about prostitutes learning English to make more money is pretty shocking.
These women are not learning English for a better life nor are they being taught be someone who is trying to help them move towards a healthier lifestyle, no, these women are Brazil are preparing for those attending the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
“With a total of 3.7 million tourists expected in the country for the World Cup, there have been lurid accounts of preparations across Brazil. In Fortaleza, a local prosecutor stated: “Foreign clients order underage prostitutes who are delivered directly by the hotels’ pimps.” Meanwhile, a massage house beside Congonhos airport is said to be offering a limousine service and hiring English speakers to improve service. In São Paulo, local reports have quoted a dental student who will earn $5,000 by giving exclusive attention to a German businessman for two weeks.”
This is from an interesting survey of Brazil’s prostitution. The article looks at both sides and multiple angles. It’s true that there are women locked into prostitution that are happy about their lives. For anyone against legalized prostitution to discount these women would be disingenuous. However, just because there are women who ‘want’ to be prostitutes, doesn’t mean it’s something that should be legal.
You would be hard pressed to show proof that legalized prostitution makes a positive impact on cultures as a whole.
